Academic Music Programs

The Academic Music Program at Ormiston College has something significant to offer each and every student at the College. It caters for students who are just commencing their formal education in Pre-school, older students who arrive at the College with no previous musical experience through to Senior students who wish to make music their career. Of course, one of the advantages of an educational institution such as Ormiston College is that the educational experience is fully integrated and developmental from P to 12.

Students at Ormiston College, undertake specific Academic Music study at different ages:

JUNIOR SCHOOL
 
All students from Prep to Year 5 have two weekly 40-minute music lessons where the students explore music through both theoretical and practical activities. Year 6 students have one 40-minute lesson per week.
  
Year 3 Sing and String 
As an extension of the classroom music experience in the Junior School, all students in Year 3 are provided the experience of learning a Stringed instrument as part of our special “Sing and String Program”. Delivered every week for 40 minutes per lesson, students are guided by string specialists who apply the skills learnt in the classroom program to performance on Violin, Viola, Cello or Bass. Year 5 Beginner Band 
Year 5 students are invited to participate in a special introduction to the co-curricular Band Program through our innovative Beginner Band Program. More information can be found here.
 
MIDDLE SCHOOL – Years 7 & 8
 
All students in Year 7 & Year 8 study Music for the entire year with one 40-minute lesson per week in Year 7 and two 40-minute music lessons per week in Year 8. The students explore the elements of music, rock and popular music, guitar and keyboard performance and film music. The students also use the computer laboratory to compose music.
 
MIDDLE & SENIOR SCHOOL – Years 9 to 12 
 
Students in Years 9 to 12 have the option of choosing Academic Music as one of their subjects. For more information on the specific programs at each year level, please refer to the Senior School subject booklet.
  
Music extension – Year 12 only
Music Extension is available to students in Year 12 who are already studying Senior Music. It is an independent study subject which extends the academic music learning in the classroom, with specialisations in Musicology, Composition or Performance.
